Episodes of elevated mood and overactivity alternating with periods of depression.
How we treat it
Mood stabilising medication, careful monitoring, and psychoeducation for the patient and family. Acute manic episodes may need short inpatient admission.
Signs to look for
- Elevated or irritable mood
- Reduced need for sleep
- Rapid speech and racing thoughts
- Overspending or risky decisions
- Depressive episodes in between
